Breeding Tips Empty Re: Breeding Tips

Like anything before you even consider breeding, do your home work!
I kept my cresties for 14 months before I even considered breeding them.
Now this is my first year, one of my females has starting laying eggs, the other two are gravid laying date is very soon.

If your cresties are first time breeders it is not unknown for the crestie to skip that year & be sexual mature the following.
It is best I have found you put the male in the female set up, this is just to prevent unnecessary stress. Also at first just watch they are getting also, sometimes it happens that the male & female you have just don't like each other, it happened to me so I swapped the males round problem was sorted!

Many people don't do this its a personal choice, I remove the males twice a week & place them back in their own vivs. This is because the male won't want to eat for chasing his girl lol, & the female will get fed of him trying his luck! So it may stop her from eating her usual amount.
Its so important that the female eats, lack of food can prevent eggs developing.
After 48 hours I put them back together.

Feeding your female crestie, as per make sure she has good quality gut loaded live foods, calcium is very important not just for the crestie but for eggs to develop.
I dust the cricket as usual but I also add a bit of calcium to the Crested Gecko Mix, which has worked well for me.

Put your egg laying box in the cestie set up a week or so after placing the male, it will still be a good two or three weeks before she lays, but let her get used to he layer box, so when it comes close to laying she will have a lot of interest in it!

Weather you use a home made incubater of lucky herp which I use set this up a GOOD TWO WEEKS BEFORE ANY EGGS ARE DUE, YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THE TEMPS ARE CORRECT BEFORE PLACING THE EGGS INSIDE.
IT CAN TAKE A WHILE TO ADJUST & GET CORRECT TEMPS!

I use Vermiculate for egg laying box & incubater medium.
I had many probs getting this right, I mix it up well in advance!
I do this by putting the required amount of Vermiculate you need in bowl, put some water mix it all round, using your hands get stuck right in there tho it can be messy!
Once all the Vermiculate has been mixed & all is wet, squeeze it out handful by handful in to another container, once you have do that squeeze AGAIN & place that in another container, there should be no drips at all, the end result should be the vermiculate clumps together with no excess water dripping when you squeeze it, if its crumbly then it to dry, add a tiny amount of water untill it clumps together.

Place the Vermiculate in the incubater container, then place the container in incubater, this way the temptures will adjust correctly before you place the eggs in, other wise condensation offton will build up & drip on your eggs, which will cause huge problems.

Place a digital thermostat not only inside the the incubater but also in your incubater tub.
I incubate at 25F which means the eggs will hatch in around 60-62 days.

YOU NOT ROTATE YOUR EGGS, THIS WILL KILL THE EMBRYO INSIDE & IT DETACH ITS SELF FROM THE INSIDE IF THE EGG & DIE!!!!!
Good practie is to put a mark on the top of the egg so you will always which way up.

Once a week remove the lid of the container your egss are in, just for a couple of mins, this just to let freah oxygen with is required for the eggs.
Also don't be afraid to very carefully pick the eggs & put an LCD light underneath to see whats going on inside, I do this once a week just because its so amazing to see how it develops inside.
Eggs should have a small pinky/red area which will grow as the days & weeks go on on. This can be see by candling them.
Also do not panic if on the first day it looks like nothing is there, it can take 48 for it to become clear.
If the eggs is a yellow colour it proberly will be infertile.
Crestie eggs esp for first time laying you will notice the eggs are slightly more point at both eggs, as the years go on the egss will become a nice oval shape.
Don't be alarmed if the egg does look out of shape, it does not always mean its a right off.
Rather then guessing, just treat it as any other eggs, if it is no good within a couple of days it will collapse then it safe to dispose of.

It is very easy to breed them, idf I can do it anyone can lol
If there any thing else I can help you just ask, I love talking reptiles....... I will keep you all posted on my eggs, hopefully will be able to film them hatch so I can post it up for all to enjoy!! xx

EGG CARE...................

If you notice any dots that look clear on the eggs its self its because the medium is to too wet.
Make up some fresh vermiculate, remove the egg carefully from the container which is too damp & place in the fresh batch.

If the eggs have dimples on the eggs the medium is too dry, cover the eggs with tissue & give a couple of light sprays.

If there is any mold of fungus on the eggs then more ofton then not, the egg is dead.
If you have candled it & it is still alive you can try rubbing a small amount of athletes foot on that egg, if need every 10 days.
HOWEVER I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE THIS & IT HAS BEEN FINE, BUT I HAVE NEVER DONE THIS MYSELF!
